Community Meeting on the North Gateway Plan: RESCHEDULED for Thursday, February 2nd at 7PM

For Immediate Release

Swanton, VT – Residents will get a chance to help envision the future development of the area of Swanton town in the northern gateway of Swanton Village at a public meeting that has been rescheduled for the Village Office Complex at 120 First Street at 7PM on Thursday, Feburary 2nd.

The Swanton Area Wide Plan is intended to identify ways in which revitalization of key sites in the northern gateway area (a district centered around the intersections of River and Depot streets) can serve as catalysts for economic growth for the Swanton community.  The work is being conducted for the Northwest Regional Planning Commission (NRPC) on behalf of the Town and Village of Swanton by Fairweather Consulting along with Stone Environmental and EDR under the guidance of a Project Steering Committee.

The steering committee consists of Reg Beliveau, Jr., Village Manager, David Jescavage, Town Administrator, Ron Kilburn, President of the Swanton Historical Society, Swanton Chamber of Commerce President Suzanne Washburn and Village President Neal Speer.  The project is sponsored by the Northwest Region Brownfields Program of the NRPC.  The Northwest Region Brownfields Program (NRBP) is aimed at leveling the playing field for developing brownfield properties by helping owners and prospective developers address environmental challenges through environmental assessment, cleanup planning and cleanup funding. The area-wide planning process positions the Town and Village to apply for future funding to support revitalization and environmental remediation of key parcels in the study area.

Village Manager Reg Beliveau is encouraging business owners, property owners and residents to participate in the planning meeting. “The areawide plan will provide a guide for future development of an important area for the Town and Village.  The participation of residents, property owners, and local businesses will be critical to ensure that we develop a shared vision for the gateway that will be embraced by the entire community and serve as a catalyst for the ongoing development of that area and of Swanton as a whole.”

The meeting on Feburary 2nd is intended to foster a community-wide discussion of what is possible in the northern gateway area from an economic standpoint and then what is desired by the community from the perspectives of economic vitality and community quality of life.  For further information, please visit the project website at www.swantonplan.com, or contact the Village Manager’s office at 802-868-3397.
